Following Colorado’s lead, the Alaska Marijuana Legalization ballot measure passed in November and became official on Tuesday. The use of marijuana is now legal for persons 21 years of age or older in the state.

People still can’t legally have more than one ounce of marijuana on them and they can’t harvest more than four ounces in their home. Consuming marijuana in public and driving while high are also outlawed.

In addition to this, the law isn’t fully implemented. The regulatory structure that allows shops like those found in Colorado is still in the works, so no one can legally make a living selling the drug at the moment.

Under federal law, marijuana is classified as a Schedule 1 narcotic, so using it is still considered a federal crime.

In the absence of any sweeping federal change on marijuana, some states have taken the initiative. 23 states still prohibit cannabis outright, but the rest of them have either legalized medical marijuana or decriminalized marijuana possession.

Colorado became the first state to legalize recreational marijuana, followed by Washington state. Alaska has now joined those two states.
