Five students from Mountain Vista participated in the Poetry Out Loud competition on Feb. 29. The competition, presented in partnership with Colorado Creative Industries, Lighthouse Writers Workshop, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. Over the past 10 years, Poetry Out Loud has reached nearly 3 million students, more than 9.500 schools, and thousands of teachers across the country.

Senior Kira Amels won the competition for the second time in a row and will represent Vista at the state competition on March 15. The poems she recited were “The Legend” by Garret Hongo and “Very Large Moth” by Craig Arnold.
