Over the weekend, the Mountain Vista Mock Trial team competed in their regionals tournament at the Douglas County Courthouse. After their appearances in trial, they placed in the top five for the competition.

“We thought we did pretty well,” Alexis Brooker, 10, a member of the team, said. “But we actually came in fourth place.”

Unfortunately, this rank does not carry the team on to the state tournament, so they will most likely reconvene again next year.

“We aren’t going to have any more practices for the rest of the year, and [the team] probably won’t do anything more [at all] until next year,” Brooker said.

MVHS appeared as team Steamboat in the Trial, facing teams from schools all around Douglas County. On Friday, they found out whether they would play the role of the prosecution or of the defense in their trials and competed twice.

On Saturday, the last half of the tournament began, and Mountain Vista went to trial for the third and fourth time.

“I felt like as a team we really composed ourselves well because there was a four-way tie for the professionals board and we were part [of that tie],” Brooker said. “I honestly think we did really well I just don’t understand why we came in fourth.”

As for how the team was scored for their rank, they will have found out last night, hopefully clearing up some of the confusion as to why the team was scored as they were.

“[I participate in Mock Trial because] we have a lot of fun as a team,” Brooker said.

Regardless of their results in the competition this year, the team has the chance to examine their strengths and weaknesses next year, possibly receiving the chance to re-direct their ranking at the end of the 2017 regionals tournament.
