Chad Bettis Battles Cancer

Chad+Bettis+Battles+Cancer

At the beginning of the 2017 season, the Rockies suffered many injuries in Spring Training, including one that was going to be a little tougher to overcome, cancer. A member of the team, pitcher Chad Bettis, was told he had testicular cancer.

Bettis finished his last round of Chemotherapy on Tuesday and spent the next three days with the team in Scottsdale, Arizona as the Rockies took on the Arizona Diamondbacks for a three-game set. Throughout his journey Bettis has been as optimistic and upbeat as possible the whole time.

Bettis has nine weeks of chemotherapy and made it through without any setbacks. Through the battle with cancer Bettis and his family welcomed a new addition to the family, a child. Bettis welcomed his first daughter into the world and she was what kept him going through his treatments.

Bud Black, Manager of the Colorado Rockies, hopes to have Bettis back pitching for them sometime during the summer. Although Bettis had to halt his season, he stayed on normal schedule and took a leadership role on the young pitching staff all through spring training, receiving support from his family, friends and fans over the course of his treatment.

“Everybody has supported me and is there fighting with me,” Bettis told the Denver Post.

Bettis used the cancer as a motivation to get back on the field and said it was a driving factor in keeping him going strong each day.

The Rockies have a 2 game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West and hope to have Bettis back in the dugout permanently in the future.
