Sound the Sirens

Sound+the+Sirens

Fans of “Suicide Squad” (2016) and/or DC Comics are in for a real treat. “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer is returning to DC to direct and produce “Gotham City Sirens”; a story that will focus on DC’s three most popular female super-villains (Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Poison Ivy/Dr. Pamela Isley and Harley Quinn/Dr. Harleen Quinzel). Margot Robbie has been confirmed to reprise her role as Harley Quinn since she was so positively received by fans and critics in “Suicide Squad”, but no official release date or casting decisions for Poison Ivy and Catwoman have been disclosed.

Fans have already begun speculating their own ideas for who should play two of their favorite female super-villains. For Catwoman, fans have suggested Ruby Rose (“Orange is the New Black”, “John Wick: Chapter Two”), Rosario Dawson (“Daredevil”, “Trance”, “Seven Pounds”), Emily Blunt (“Edge of Tomorrow”, “The Girl on the Train”, “Sicario”), Olivia Wilde (“TRON: Legacy”, “House”, “Cowboys & Aliens”), Eva Green (“300: Rise of an Empire”, “Casino Royale”, “The Golden Compass”) and Rachel Weisz (“The Mummy”, “The Lobster”, “Denial”). Poison Ivy’s suggested actresses are Rihanna (“Battleship”, “Home”, “This is the End”), Rose Leslie (“Game of Thrones”, “Honeymoon”, “The Last Witch Hunter”), Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”, “The Forest”, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay”) and Holland Roden (“Teen Wolf”, “Bring It On: Fight to the Finish”, “House of Dust”).

All of these fan suggestions are excellent, although I seriously doubt Rosario Dawson will be considered for Catwoman/Selina Kyle due to her commitment to DC’s rival, Marvel through “Daredevil” (2015-present) and “Luke Cage” (2016-present). I am especially fascinated by fans’ nomination of Rihanna for the role of Poison Ivy; her appearance on the list of fan suggestions was incredibly unexpected and creative and I am really interested in seeing how Rihanna’s confident personality will interact with Poison Ivy’s character if she lands the role.

That being said, my personal choices for the roles would be Ruby Rose as Catwoman and Rose Leslie as Poison Ivy; both of these actresses are perfect for these roles, their past performances indicate that they possess the confidence, charisma and wit needed to play these characters and I can just see the two of them as their characters.
If I can offer one piece of advice to David Ayer and the creative team behind “Gotham City Sirens”, it is this; listen to the fans. We know what we are doing, we love this universe and its characters and we are very concerned about the shape of the DC Cinematic Universe. Fans (myself included) were immensely disappointed with “Batman Versus Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016) “Suicide Squad” and “Man of Steel” (2013), but you have the potential to make up for your failures with your future films (“Wonder Woman”, “Justice League”, “The Flash”, “Green Lantern Corps”, “Cyborg”, “The Batman” and, of course, “Gotham City Sirens”). Do not ignore our suggestions, concerns or ideas. “Gotham City Sirens” is an excellent idea, but if it is not done correctly, it could end up becoming the next “Batman & Robin” (1995), “Catwoman” (2004) or “Elektra” (2005). This is a very easy movie/idea to screw up. Tread lightly, DC.
