20 staff members and editors from Mountain Vista Media attended the National High School Journalism Convention in San Francisco, California from April 12-14. The convention consisted of a series of multiple workshops over the course of three days including photography, newspaper, broadcast and online.
As apart of their write-off contests some entered prior to attending the convention, staff and editors sat in a critique room where professionals help gave their advice about how to better their photography skills. While others who participated in a writing contest, wrote their stories live and had to wait for the results the following day. There were competitions that needed photos submitted by attendees prior to the convention. A few students from Vista’s media program won awards.

Winning a Superior award is very difficult as that is the highest honor one can recieve.
“Winning [the superior award] was really motivating and fulfilling,” junior Carly Ems said.
Attendees were given a difficult task to see who proved to be the top journalist in their write-off contest.
“[In my write-off contest], we were given two photos and were given the task to write captions for them,” Sophomore Anne Gerringer said. “We also had to write a 200-word story about a topic with a different approach.”
The total attendance at the convention was over 3,500 students
The editors at MVM were really proud of their staff members from winning awards.
“I was really proud of some of the staff members for winning their awards,” Senior Lauren Lippert said. “I know for some of them it was their first time going to a yearbook convention and so it was really awesome to see that their hard work paid off.”
