With Halloween right around the corner, many students scramble to find a costume at the last minute. Whether you’re going to a Halloween party, handing out candy, or Trick – or – Treating, your Halloween costume is most likely influenced by the events, movies, and pop culture that have taken place over the past year. Here are my predictions for the top 10 most popular Halloween costumes this year.
10. Unicorn

Whether it’s represented through a rainbow grilled cheese or a unicorn inspired Instagram feed, the unicorn trend took social media and pop culture by storm over the past year. In light of this, many people who are connected on social media or “follow” the trend could use this as a possible Halloween costume. However, this idea is mostly taken on by people who look to make their own costumes, as the unicorn theme is very vague.
9. Emojis

In addition to the unicorn trend, emojis made a comeback this year with the major update of the iPhone. With this in mind, people found emojis so important that they felt compelled to create them their own universe in “The Emoji Movie”. Also making a popular comeback this year was the poop emoji; for whatever reason. Because this costume is popular among younger audiences rather than high schoolers, it is ranked so low on the list.
8. “Riverdale” Characters

With the second season premiere of the hit TV series “Riverdale” on Oct. 11, fans are eager to see the series unfold over the following weeks. With the TV show being about teens, it is easier for young adults to relate to the show.

After the release of the seventh season of the popular TV drama “Game of Thrones”, some of the most common Halloween costumes this year will come from this show. Characters such as John Snow and Daenerys Targaryen appear often in the series and will reflect in costumes for all ages.
6. Belle from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”

With the release of the remake of the classic Disney film “Beauty and the Beast” last Spring, many young girls will be dressing up as princesses for Halloween. With a total of over 1.263 million dollars produced at the box office, the movie is among one of the highest grossing films of the year. Keeping this in mind, both “Beauty and the Beast” fans old and new will choose a costume that knows no concept of time; and can be enjoyed by generations old and new.
5. Wonder Woman

With the release of the “Wonder Woman” movie this past May, female students all over were eager to see a female superhero get their own movie. Keeping this in mind, whether they’re a “Wonder Woman” fan old or new, “Wonder Woman” and characters from the movie will be some of the most popular Halloween costumes this year.
4. Characters from the Netflix Original Series “Stranger Things”

With the much anticipated release of the second season of “Stranger Things” this month, many students and fans alike will use characters from the TV show for their Halloween costumes. However, this does not mean that all of the characters will be popular costumes. The most popular Halloween costumes from the franchise are expected to be Eleven and the Demogorgon. Be sure to catch the season premiere this Fri., Oct. 27.
3. Donald Trump

In light of the Presidential election that took place last fall, many Americans will feel the need to dress up as or mimic the newest American president.
2. Pennywise from “It”

Based on a popular Stephen King novel, Pennywise from the hit movie “It” will be a popular costume among older audiences this Halloween. With this in mind, Pennywise will not be a popular costume among people passing out candy and haunted house visitors. You never know what could happen with this costume… maybe someone wearing it will sneak up behind you!
1. Characters from “Star Wars”

With the release of the newest “Star Wars” movie this Dec., “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” marks the eighth film in the franchise. As a result, many fans are eager for the movie to come out; and the only way for them to contain their excitement is to use characters from “Star Wars” movies old and new as a Halloween costume. Of the “Star Wars” costumes, the most popular are predicted to be Rey, Luke Skywalker, Kylo Ren or a Stormtrooper. Even if you are a huge “Star Wars” fan, these costumes would be some to avoid this Halloween; you will see too many to count.
