Vista Cross Country (XC) competed in their first race of the 2017-2018 season at the two-mile invitational held at home on the soccer field on August 25th. They competed against Pine Creek, Rock Canyon, Dakota Ridge, Frontier Academy, Mead, Niwot, and Palmer .
The varsity team dominated the meet. The boys’ finished with 29 points, blowing out Palmer Ridge in second place with 82 points. The girls’ varsity team also had a dominating win at the meet. Finishing with 31 points compared to second place Palmer Ridge with 94 points. This was an impressive win for the team. Crushing the competition and showing how strong the team will be this season.
Senior Shayan Zarrin was a part of Vista XC last year, but was limited due to a hip flexor injury. “I’m really happy to come back strong for my first race. I was injured all last season so it feels good to be at the top again and help my team up front,” Zarrin said. Zarrin has been running for as long as he can remember, and loves every second of it. Zarrin finished in fourth place in the varsity boys’ two-mile race.
The outstanding performance at the invitational is only more motivation for the varsity team to maintain their position at the top. “In order to be successful at this point we need to focus on the little things like getting enough sleep every night, drinking lots and lots of water and making sure we are eating healthy and enough during the day. “ Junior Ethan Rouse said.
In addition to working on themselves, the team also strives to work on improving the whole team. “One thing we can still work on is our pack time. Our gap from 2-5 minutes was great but we need to try and stick closer to Carter [the Invitational’s top runner] next race.” Rouse said.
