‘American Sniper’ Murderer Sentenced to Life in Prison

The trial concerning Eddie Ray Routh shooting and killing Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield Chris_Kyle_at_Camp_Pendletonhad little to do with whether or not Routh had committed the murder. The defense for Routh was predicated upon the argument that Routh was not mentally sane when doing so.

The murder occurred on Feb. 2, 2013 and the trial began on Feb. 11, 2015.

On Feb. 24, after less than 3 hours of deliberation, the jury found Routh guilty of capital murder in the deaths of Kyle and Littlefield.

Judge Jason Cashon immediately sentenced Routh to life in prison without the possibility of parole in the capital murder conviction.

Jurors deliberating the case had three choices: guilty, not guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity.

Defense attorneys said Routh was insane, but prosecutors dismissed that assertion.

“Ladies and gentleman, that is not insanity. That is just cold, calculated capital murder. He is guilty of capital murder. He is not in any way insane,” said prosecutor Jane Starnes during closing arguments.
