Twenty members competed at FCCLA State March 31. They came out with the best results in school history as 13 members received gold and seven received silver.

“I liked spending time with everyone and cheering each other on in the different categories,” senior Megan Pepper said. Pepper received gold in the Focus on Children category.

Many members had to present a 10-minute presentation about various topics depending on the event, while others did on site competitions in baking or cooking.

“I loved getting to express myself through my cooking and getting to spend time with all the seniors right before we graduate,” senior Lauren Bigner said. Bigner also received a gold in Gourmet Foods — Savory.

The group had a mix of first time and returning participants. With the conference extending over April Fool’s Day, members took advantage of the holiday. The seniors TPd the freshmen room in good fun.

“I thought the pranks were hilarious,” freshman Julia Foley said.

“The best part about state was TPing the freshmen,” Mawhinney said. “Just kidding, my favorite part was being with everyone and having one of the most memorable FCCLA states as my last one.”

Mawhinney attended her fourth state competition. Her and fellow seniors, Jenna Yoss and Savannah Raisor, received gold and third place overall, qualifying for the national competition, for their presentation in the Food Innovations category.

While members were not competing, they had down time to spend time with each other, attend workshops and go to a conference dance.

“I liked being able to support my friends and fellow classmates throughout the weekend, as well as starting a conga line at the dance,” senior Erika Soderholm said.
