Mountain Vista’s boys and girls varsity basketball teams dominated in their first games of the season in the Mountain Vista/Rock Canyon Tip-off Tournament.
The boys varsity team kicked off the tournament beating Ralston Valley High School, 78-65. They went on to defeat Chatfield High School in the semifinals, 78-53, and they later beat Rock Canyon High School in the championship, 60-46. It was the team’s first time beating the Jaguars in five years and the first time the team won their own tournament.
“Last weekend’s tournament win was big for us,” senior Simon May said. “We still have lots of work to do to get to where we want to be but winning our own tournament was not a bad start.”
The girls varsity team started their tournament with a 55-28 win over Arvada West High School. The team followed up their first win with a 45-24 semifinal win over Ft. Collins High School. In the championship, the girls defeated Rocky Mountain High School, 53-38.
“We have been working really hard and all love each other so I hope that is carried throughout the [rest of the] season.” Sophomore Anna Duffy said.
After this weekend’s tournament, both teams now sit near the top of the Continental League standings.
