Troye Sivan “Heaven” Music Video

Troye+Sivan+Heaven+Music+Video

Australian pop artist, Troye Sivan, released a music video for his song “Heaven” on Jan. 20, the day Donald Trump was inaugurated as President of the United States. He made this video in response to Trump’s anti-LGBTQ+ administration, to send a message of love and safety on what is such a dark day for some people. Vice President Mike Pence is trying to legalize parents forcing their children into conversion therapy, so plenty of  LGBTQ+ people are genuinely afraid of him. They do not feel as if Trump’s America will be safe for them, and they have a right to as neither Trump nor Pence has shown actual concern or sympathy towards the community. Though Sivan is Australian, he spends most of his time in America and has a large fan base here. Sivan has based his platform on the openness of his sexuality. He identifies as gay, and has dedicated years of his music to the LGBTQ+ community. Sivan is Jewish, and though the Jewish faith does not believe in heaven or hell, his song is about believing in God but being scared of not being accepted for who you are. Sivan’s song is one many people, young and old, can identify heavily with. The video depicts scenes of conversion therapy, LGBTQ+ protests, same sex weddings and people fighting for what they believe in. His lyrics, “Without losing a piece of me, how do I get to heaven? Without changing a part of me, how do I get to heaven?” are about the strong religious opposition that is present towards the LGBTQ+ community even in the twenty-first century. Sivan did not write this song about just his feelings, they’re the feelings of many in his community. While the song is written specifically about the struggles of LGBTQ+ people, everyone can appreciate the message of the video, love and acceptance of all.
